Watched the most 2024 version last night and the writing was awful. In fairness to McGregor, I did feel as though he was the most entertaining part of the flick. Maybe we need to compare this to other movies starring his contemporaries such as Scorpion King with Randy Couture or whatever Fast and Furious Rousey was on. Jk, ain’t nobody got time for that.
Yes, the more I've thought about this the more I realize he was the only character I really enjoyed every time he showed up, even if sometimes only ironically
I knew it wasn't going to be good when they switched the settings from southwest Missouri to the Florida Keys. Maybe it's the Missouri in me, but a bouncer fighting a millionaire just seems more of a midwestern thing.
Oddly enough, I had the same experience of having never seen the original but being thankful for Amazon's recommending it with the remake.
I really wish they had let Conor just be an incomprehensible Irish Terminator. Like a puffy Mickey O'Neil from Snatch.
In some ways the remake started making sense to me (kung fu was big in the 80's so here's a kung fu Swayze, 2020's we like MMA so here's an MMA version) but then it completely flopped on everything it could have had going for it. I really enjoyed the fight sequences for instance, even with the wonky 3D and feel like they could have leaned into it in a Sharknado way. Or like when the Doom movie goes first person suddenly.
You wrote a comprehensive review, you know how many opportunities were missed.
The original was equally surprising but as a triumph.
Can we expect more MMA fighter movie reviews? Didn't you do a Cerone one, sort of MST3K style?
Thanks for reading, man. I'll mostly be doing the usual fight breakdowns, but I enjoyed writing this, so I think I will do some more movie reviews in the future. We've watched a couple Cerrone movies on the MMA Depressed-us, which I do with Zane and Phil whenever there's a week without a UFC event. Usually we watch bad fights, but the bad movies are always a fun treat
